The YMCA International Learning Center offers the following courses:

Beginning (I and II)

Two levels of beginning English classes are offered to students with little or no prior English experience. Classes introduce students to basic English sentence structure, grammar, and vocabulary through extensive reading, writing, and conversation practice. Upon completion, students will be able to communicate and understand basic information about their lives and routines.
Grammar: Topics include the simple present and past tenses, singular and plural nouns, possessives, time frames, pronouns, prepositions, and more.
Intensive: This very active, participatory option provides students with additional opportunities for controlled conversation practice.

Intermediate (I and II)

Two levels of intermediate English classes allow students with some English background to significantly improve competencies in speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Students will gain the grammar proficiency and solid working vocabulary needed for more advanced English study, and will be given extensive opportunities to practice speaking, improve pronunciation, and develop stronger reading and listening comprehension skills.
Grammar : Classes cover the present perfect, past, and future tenses, modals, phrasal verbs, gerunds, infinitives, the passive voice, and more.
Intensive: This immersive English class experience is designed to quickly increase proficiency through a selection of interactive classroom exercises. Depending on the instructor, students may engage in classroom discussions about areas of student interest; write, rehearse, and perform skits; participate in workshops on paragraph structure, punctuation, and written composition; or read and discuss true short stories to build comprehension skills.

“Path to Fluency”: Advanced Speaking and Pronunciation

Estimates are that 40% of the information in spoken language is communicated through tone alone. In this English class, we refine the competencies students already have in speaking English by focusing on how to use rhythm, stress, and intonation to increase clarity. By the end of the 8-week cycle, all students (not just some) hear significant improvements in their own pronunciation. Students also acquire specific skill sets in further improving their own pronunciation that they continue to utilize long after they have graduated. Our unique curriculum for business professionals, medical doctors, attorneys, university students, and doctoral candidates draws students from MIT, BU, Northeastern, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s, and other outstanding organizations.
