Charles River - Assistant Aquatics Director

The Charles River YMCA in Needham seeks to hire a full-time Assistant Aquatics Director to help lead its busy aquatics programs. This is an active, family-oriented YMCA with ample programming for children and adults.

This position is primarily responsible for assisting in the supervision and management of all facets of the Aquatic Department in accordance with the policies established by the Board of Directors of the Charles River Branch and the General Board of the YMCA of Greater Boston. This position reports to the Aquatic Director.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:

1. Provide excellent member service by exceeding member expectations.
2. Engage in active listening with members in order to build relationships, understand individual's goals and interests and take the initiative to assist in the achievement of those goals.
3. Provide a minimum of 25 hours of direct teaching or lifeguarding hours per week.
4. Provide an effective administration of all aspects of the YMCA Swim Lesson program.
5. Assist in the hiring, training, and supervising and evaluating all paid and volunteer instructors and lifeguards as programs dictate.
6. Assist the Aquatic Director with pool maintenance, staff scheduling and public relations.
7. Maintain and update pool bulletin boards.
8. Develop a staff schedule for each session and session break under the director's guidance.
9. Ensure that all class rosters are filled out and assign appropriate instructors to each class.
10. Oversee all Saturday aquatic programs.
11. Develop and foster a family club atmosphere by interacting with members and staff in an enthusiastic, courteous, and friendly manner.
12. Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA mission and goals.
13. Remain current in required and voluntary training in order to promote growth of body, mind and spirit and character values for all.
14. Assume other duties deemed necessary by supervisor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in physical education, recreation or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least two years experience in instruction and management of a wide variety of Aquatics programs.
  • Hold current certifications in YMCA On the Guard II Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR, Fundamentals of Teaching YMCA Swimming Lessons, Parent/Child, Preschool and Youth & Adult Instructor, or the equivalent and be willing to cross over to YMCA certifications within 90 days of first available course.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES/KNOW HOW:

  • Understand the relationship of the general public to the association, of staff to volunteer, and of staff to staff, and be able to effectively enhance and cultivate those relationships.
  • Ability to interpret, carry out and implement into programs the mission and goals of the YMCA.
  • Ability to supervise staff and volunteers and actively handle a variety of functions at the same time.
  • Work as an integral member of a staff team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with adults and children alike.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Physically and verbally able to interact with members and staff.
  • At times, be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Complete all physical prerequisites of the YMCA Lifeguard Certification course.
