Hyde Park - Assistant Swim Coach, part time

 

General Function:  Under the supervision of the Aquatic Coordinator, this part time position is responsible for assisting in the supervision and management of all facets of the Hyde Park Sting Rays Swim Team in accordance with the policies established by the Board of Directors of the Hyde Park  Family Branch and the General Board of the YMCA of Greater Boston.  Additional duties include recruiting, orienting, training and supervising all staff related to his/her area of responsibility.  This position will act on the behalf of the Head Swim Coach in his/her absence.

Know How:

1. Specialized, Technical or Practical Know-How: Hold a Bachelors Degree in physical education, recreation or a related field from an accredited college or university, and/or have at least two years experience in instruction and management of a wide variety of Aquatics programs. Hold current certifications in YMCA On the Guard II Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, O2 administration, Fundamentals of Teaching YMCA Swimming Lessons, Parent/Child, Preschool and Youth & Adult Instructor, or the equivalent and be willing to cross over to YMCA certifications within 90 days or first available course. Be a current YMCA Lifeguard Instructor or PCP or Youth & Adult Trainer or be willing to become one within the first year of hire.

2. Human Relations Skills: Understand the relationship of the general public to the association, of staff to volunteer, and of staff to staff; and be able to effectively enhance and cultivate those relationships. Be able to interpret, carry out and implement into programs the mission and goals of the YMCA.

3. Managerial and Consultative Skills: The Assistant Swim Team Coach must be able to supervise staff and volunteers, have the ability to actively handle a variety of functions at the same time, work as an integral member of a staff team, and be able to communicate effectively with adults and children alike.

Principle Duties

Compile daily workouts appropriate for a wide range of swimming levels.

Assist swimmers in their progression through the different skill levels.

Observe and correct errors; focuses on stoke development and stroke mechanics

Teach starts and turns as well as race tactics

Generate, organize, post, and distribute to parents and swimmers. Post meets information on the swim team bulletin board.

Attend meets, supervise and motivate swimmers, assist in determining race strategy, direct warm up exercises, evaluate swimmers performances and offer positive suggestions for improvement.

Maintain attendance rolls and reports.

Attend to the emotional and mental well being of swimmers. Build self-esteem and confidence of team members and use good judgment in determining expectations and level of physical strain placed on swimmers.

Ensure the safety of swim team members. Develop safety rules and guidelines and monitors swimmers in the locker room and pool area to prevent "horse play".

Compile weekly and monthly statistics on all assigned activities and keep accurate program records.

Coordinate and order all seasonal inventories of medals and ribbons. (Must be approved by supervisor).

Project a positive and professional image to parents and to the public.

Respond quickly and efficiently to all emergency situations.

Mobilize support of assigned programs and projects through recruitment of volunteers soliciting donation of equipment and supplies

Work as part of a team to help coordinate additional Center projects with other staff members.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Physically and verbally be able to interact with members and staff.

At times be able to lift 50 lbs.

Be flexible to be available if needed for early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays

Must have necessary swimming endurance to provide water rescues

Complete all physical requirements of the YMCA Lifeguard Certification course

The effectiveness of the incumbent's fulfillment of the responsibilities of this position shall be measured by:

Sound administration of the Hyde Park Sting Rays evident in purposeful and quality programs, strong public relations, and a sound financial position

Steady growth and high retention in the number and variety of aquatic programs and participants.

Development and maintenance of quality staff, and the exercise of good judgment and competence in implementing stating needs, objectives and mission of the association.
