Waltham - Counselor for Teen camp
This Summer the Waltham Family YMCA is proud to present a great series of teen summer camp options. We are looking for staff who have experience working with 11-15 year-olds to serve as role models for the teens.
'Voyagers' counselors accompany teens on daily trips throughout Eastern Massachusetts. The trips are adventure- and education-based, including kayaking, rock climbing, sailing, visits to museums, and more. Last year's counselor's cite Voyagers as the best summer they've ever had!
We are also looking for counselors to work our other Teen camps: 'Voyagers Extreme!' and 'Leadership Camp'. These camps occur during staggered weeks through the summer, so the counselors who fill this position will be expected to work both camps. Dates are June 30th through August 15th:
Voyagers Extreme! is an exciting addition to our teen camp line-up. Campers and staff will spend the entire week camping in tents, including a preparatory day at the YMCA, and a three day backpacking trip in the White mountains! There are 2 weeks of 'Voyagers Extreme!' this summer: July 14-18 and August 4-8. Counselors must be prepared to spend both weeks in the woods, away from home, Monday through Friday. All training and Equipment is provided.
'Leadership Camp' will run June 30-July 3, July 21-25 and August 11-15. For campers entering grades 8-12, Leadership Camp is an opportunity for older campers to build responsibility and learn what it takes to be an effective leader. Counselors provide team-building and problem solving initiatives, facilitate the teens' planning of an end-of-week event, and supervise teens mentoring younger campers.
For the counselors who work the two above programs, there are two non-camp weeks (July 7-11 and July 28 - August 1) which will be spent planning, training, and assisting with other on-site camps.
Required Qualifications:
-All camp staff must be CPR and First-Aid certified (we provide training if needed)
-All teen camp staff must be over 21.
-'Voyagers' staff must have a 7-D drivers license or be willing to obtain one (we can facilitate the process). Either way, they must be comfortable driving a 10-passenger Van.
- Voyagers Extreme! staff must have camping/backpacking experience or be willing and able to attend a training this spring. We can pay for the cost of training, but the training is on a volunteer basis and therefor is otherwise unpaid. It's a lot of fun, though!
- All teen camp staff must be comfortable being directly responsible for a group of up to 8 teens.
