    My Y Story

For Mary Wendel, the decision to donate to Sandy Island Family Camp was easy. When she first visited the camp in 1958 at age 4, Sandy Island became a tradition that would be passed on to future generations as her family expanded. Mary’s children and grandchildren continue to visit Sandy Island as campers, volunteers, employees and donors!

How has Sandy Island had a positive impact on your life?
“Sandy Island has had a profound impact on my family. The time we spent together on Sandy Island strengthened our family and brought us much closer. Despite no longer working at camp, we all return every year as campers. It still is one of our favorite places to spend time together as a family.”

Why do you support the Y?
“I believe strongly in the YMCA’s commitment to ‘Keep Families Strong.’ I believe the Y does a wonderful job in providing opportunities for families, children and young adults to grow into leaders who can then go out into the community and provide guidance to others who may need help. As a member of the Sandy Island staff I witnessed teens and young adult’s transition from shy, introverted individuals to real leaders who can inspire others. Sandy Island is also a wonderfully unique place for families to spend quality time separate from the outside world and grow stronger as a family.”

Why do you choose to donate time and money to the Y?
“The decision to donate time and money was an easy one for me. The Y has given so much to us and I feel it is important to give back so that others may have the same wonderful opportunities. I know that there are many worthy charities that need support, but the Y has so many programs, including camps, which help to strengthen the community as a whole, but also help guide young children and teens towards productive and healthy activities. And for those people who cannot donate money, there are many opportunities to donate time and volunteer. The opportunities to donate time and money are endless!”

Thanks Mary for your commitment to the Y!
